LAKE FOREST, Ill. Clive Walford Jersey . -- The Chicago Bears agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract with defensive lineman Israel Idonije and are bringing him back for a second stint. They also released receiver Earl Bennett and added depth at safety, agreeing to one-year deals with Craig Steltz and Danny McCray. Idonije spent last season with Detroit after playing his first nine for Chicago. He had just 11 tackles and a half-sack with the Lions, but played some of the best ball of his career toward the end of his time with the Bears. He had 20 1/2 sacks over his last three seasons with Chicago. At 33, he doesnt give the Bears the youth theyre seeking. But with his ability to play end or tackle, he does provide the versatility theyre looking for as they revamp a struggling defence. A third-round draft pick out of Vanderbilt in 2008, Bennett had 185 catches for 2,277 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was a favourite target of Jay Cutler, his college teammate, but he also has a history of concussions. With Bennett gone, Marquess Wilson becomes the favourite for the third receiver spot behind stars Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. Steltz, a fourth-round draft pick by the Bears in 2008, made one start last season and had one pass break-up along with 14 tackles and 14 special teams tackles. McCray was mainly a special teams contributor during his four seasons with Dallas. He had eight defensive and eight special teams tackles last season. The Bears have been busy of late, releasing defensive end Julius Peppers and bringing back cornerback Charles Tillman on a one-year deal. They have two new ends in Willie Young and Lamarr Houston, and theyve also added Ryan Mundy and M.D. Jennings to the mix at safety. Tim Brown Jersey . However, Jim Popp isnt sure how long hell be able to admire wide receiver Duron Carter. Justin Ellis Jersey . Neither striker Demba Ba nor Fernando Torres came close to scoring as Chelsea was left unsuccessfully appealing for penalties in this drab penultimate game of the season. "Our strikers are good strikers, no doubt about that, but players with some specific qualities," Mourinho said. http://www.shoptheraidersonline.com/Elite-Donald-Penn-Raiders-Jersey/ . The Australian is competing in his final season in Formula One and still looking for his first win this year. He will look to end Vettels run of six straight race wins on Sunday. Webber, who is fifth in the championship, earned his second pole from the past three races and 13th of his career. NEWARK, N.J. -- Ray Emery gave up four goals on 15 shots in 22:47 of playing time, and even had a fight Friday against Washington. On Saturday against New Jersey, he showed a different kind of fight. Emery stopped all 14 shots he faced, leading the Flyers past the Devils 1-0 in perhaps last-place Philadelphias most complete effort of the season. "A night like tonight, its not that hard to stay focused after a game like last night," said Emery, who participated in a line brawl between the Flyers and Capitals, headlined by him fighting an unwilling Braden Holtby in the 7-0 loss. "You challenge yourself and you could see it in the whole team that we were embarrassed. "We were gonna show how much we wanted to play tonight." The Flyers, coming off easily their worst game of the season, indeed put together a gutsy effort that was enough to beat a New Jersey team that hadnt played since Tuesday. "I knew the guys would be ready to go," Flyers coach Craig Berube said. "They were obviously very frustrated and upset at the game against Washington. I knew that the focus was there and (they) played a strong game." Philadelphia recorded just its fourth win of the season, and perhaps turned a corner at the Prudential Center, of all places, a building in which the Flyers had failed to get a victory in the past six tries. "Its been a tough building for us to come in and play," Berube said. "I thought we finally had the patience to beat them in a game. Thats basically what it boils down to." On Friday, Emery received the highest total of 29 penalty minutes. He was charged with leaving the goal crease, instigating a fight, and fighting. He was also ejected from the game. In the melee, a total of 114 penalty minutes were handed out. "Theres a reason that stuff happens last night in the game. They care," Berube said. "Theyre mad and theyre frustrated. I know what theyre feeling. Ive been there. I knew theyd be ready." The Flyers scored the lone goal on a deflection by Brayden Schenn, who altered a shot from Andrej Meszaros, to beat New Jerseys Martin Brrodeur at 14:29 of the first period. Jim Otto Jersey. "Its just important to have a bounce-back effort after last night. It really was a complete team game from start to finish," Emery said. "The most encouraging thing was the third period where we really took it to them. They didnt get anything. They got two shots. We needed that after last night." Emery, in his second stint with the Flyers, posted his 15th career shutout. "Hes been a winner and a battler his whole life," Berube added. "I knew hed have a good game." The Devils simply didnt get the effort they wanted, going 0-for-5 on the power play. New Jersey had just three shots with the man advantage. "We just didnt play very well," New Jerseys Jaromir Jagr said. "We didnt play good enough to win the game, and we didnt have to play extra good (to win)." New Jersey was short two forwards, as Patrik Elias (upper body) and Travis Zajac (ankle) were late scratches. "We had some power plays," Jagr said, "(but) we had to change it because we missed two guys right before the game." New Jersey will be in Minnesota on Sunday, and Zajac and Elias will not be with the team. Brodeur -- who made his third consecutive start in the loss and finished with 20 saves -- said he will not play vs. the Wild. "I thought Marty was good, he gave us a chance to win," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "I thought, defensively, we were fine. We were good enough to win. "It was the other end of the ice that didnt get the job done." NOTES: The NHL did not suspend Emery for his actions in Fridays brawl. ... Devils F Mattias Tedenby played in place of Elias. . The Flyers announced that F Steve Downie would be released from the hospital Sunday. Downie is out indefinitely with a concussion. . Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said F Vincent Lecavalier will play Tuesday in Carolina after being listed as day-to-day with facial contusions. . METAIRIE, La. Terrelle Pryor Jersey . - New Orleans Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro expects to look back on this week as a turning point in his career. For now, though, hes adjusting to an apparent demotion and a dose of humility. With the Saints still in the playoff picture but coming off a stunning 41-10 loss to Carolina, Vaccaro said Thursday that hed been called into a meeting with coach Sean Payton this week and told he needed to perform better.Hes right, Vaccaro said of his coach. Ive made too many costly mistakes this year that Ive got to get corrected.Vaccaro, a 2013 first-round draft choice who has started every game at strong safety this season, also said his role in the defence is changing, though he wouldnt say precisely how.Payton, likewise, was vague in discussing how the Saints would deploy Vaccaro against the Chicago Bears on Monday night.Listen, you have a game like the one we just had, theres a ton of things (to re-evaluate), not just in his play, but in a number of guys, Payton said. But were going to need him to play and play well. He is going to obviously be a huge factor for us in this game.Earlier this week, Payton said he would not rule out any lineup changes after the Saints not only lost for the fourth time in five games, but were not even competitive against a Panthers squad that came into the Superdome on a six-game losing streak.Payton also made roster moves, cutting fourth-year receiver Joe Morgan on Tuesday and promoting receiver Seantavius Jones from the practice squad.Everybody knows coach is serious. Weve all got to play better, Vaccaro said. We have such a winning tradition around here that weve got to uphold. And hes made that very clear.Payton said that he also worked out four kickers, including former Saints place kicker Garrett Hartley, on Wednesday. The Saints have not made a change from current place kicker Shayne Graham, who was brought in to replace Hartley around the same time last season. Graham has made 18 of 20 field goal attempts this season, with both misses coming from beyond 40 yards. However, one of those misses came in the Superdome on Sunday. You can be unhappy off the last performance, and yet — look — I pay close attention to his numbers, Payton said. We wanted to look at what was available. ... Shayne, hes going to respond no different than the rest of these guys were challenging. Theyll respond.Vaccaro said he was one of a lot of guys who met individually with Payton, but did not name the others.Payton spoke of a sense of urgency to improve a lot of things, but declined to provide details on meetings with the team or individual players.Although Vaccaro was drafted as a safety, he spent his rookie season primarily covering slot receivers out of the nickel cornerback position. This season, he has been in on 66 tackles, including a sack, and has two interceptions.Still, he said his transition to strong safety this season has not gone as smoothly as hed hoped and wouldnt be surprised if his role shifts back to more of what it was last season. All this stuffs new. But Ive got to be better, man. Ive got to be better for the team, Vaccaro added. Theyre getting the plan together. If Im better at nickel right now, if I can help the team win at nickel, then Im playing nickel. I dont care if its first, second or third down. If thats what they want me to do. It looked good last year. That might be where they want me to be.Vaccaro, wearing a fresh, close-cropped haircut, said Payton was fair in that he was both critical and encouraging, reminding the second-year safety that coaches still see him as a player with Pro Bowl potential, and that the goal remains to let Vaccaro work toward fulfilling that.It kind of gives me new life. Ive got a new cut and everything. It kind of put a reset on everything, Vaccaro said of his meeting with Payton. When I shook his hand, I felt like it changed my career.Notes: Pass-rushing outside linebacker Junior Galette (knee) and starting left tackle Terron Armstead (neck) were both held out of practice on Thursday. ... NEW ORLEANS -- Monty Williams was hoping a return to the Crescent City after an arduous, five-game road trip would energize his weary Pelicans. Joel Bitonio Jersey . But it was the visiting Washington Wizards who played with more intensity, holding off a furious late rally in a 102-96 victory Wednesday night. Trevor Ariza scored 21 points and John Wall added 20 to lead Washington, which is suddenly finding the road more inviting. The victory was the second road win in as many nights for the Wizards, who have now won six of seven away from home. "There was a stretch in the first half where we had five stops in a row and scored on all five which created the lead for us," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "We were a little sloppy down the stretch but it was a real solid effort." Bradley Beal added 17 points, Jan Vesely 12 and Marcin Gortat and Nene 11 each for the Wizards. Beal made three of his first four 3-point attempts and added four assists. Vesely was 6 of 8 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds, a game-high five on the offensive end, which led Washingtons 13 second-chance points. Gortat added 14 rebounds and former Pelican Ariza 10 to lead Washington to a 46-37 advantage on the boards. "(Vesely) is definitely our most athletic big, and he brings a lot of energy," Beal said. "Whenever hes playing the way hes capable of playing, were a great team." Eric Gordon scored 23 points and Anthony Davis 21 for the Pelicans, who were coming off of a four-game road trip that saw New Orleans endure a two-day delay in Indianapolis because of the severe winter storms that paralyzed air traffic earlier this week. "We just did not compete in the second quarter, not to the level that they were competing," Williams said of a period when the Pelicans were outscored 33-16 to fall behind 61-44. "Theres no excuse for that. Weve got young guys." Brian Roberts scored 11 points, all in the second half, and Greg Stiemsma 10 for New Orleans, which trailed by as many as 23 in the third quarter. "Our energy was down," Pelicans guard Austin Rivers said. "I didnt think we were focused. We are picking up bad habits. When we get down six or seven, we act like the game is over and the lead gets worse. Thats not coaching. Thats on us. "Its discipline and pride. Weve got to have a little something inside you." The Pelicans trailed 87-66 to begin the fourth quarter, but opened with a 14-4 run to trim the deficit to 91-80 midway through the period. The Wizards committed turnovers on three consecutive possessions during one sloppy stretch and scored only two points during another five-minute span. New Orleans got within 93-87 with 2:56 remaining, but could come no closer. "The biggest deal to me was that the level of competing was different (in the fourth quarter)," Williams said. "We did not make any adjustments. We did what we were supposed to do and we had a 30 to 15 quarter." With the exception of an early two-minute window, Washington dominated the first half, playing energized on the defensive end and controlling the interior. The Wizards made their first five field-goal attempts in racing to an 11-6 lead. But just as quickly, the shots quit falling and New Orleans took advantage, outscoring the Wizards 14-1 in a little more than two minutes to take a 20-12 lead with 4:21 left in the quarter. The Pelicans defence effectively sealed off the middle during the run, forcing Washington to settle for looks from the perimeter. However, New Orleans spurt proved to be an early tease for the fans. The Wizards closed the quarter on a 16-8 run to tie the score at 28 and opened the second on a 12-0 run. Martell Websters 3-pointer gave the Wizards a 40-28 with 7:55 remaining in the quarter. During that stretch, the Pelicans missed four shots and committed two turnovers. Washington closed the half on a 21-16 run to take a 61-44 lead. "We were a little bit tired," Pelicans centre Alexis Ajinca said. "Sometimes its in the head, sometimes its in the legs. Tonight. it was a little bit of both." NOTES: The 61 points given up by the Pelicans tied a season high for points allowed in the first half. New Orleans also gave up 61 in the first half Jan. 1 at Minnesota, which resulted in a 124-112 loss. ... Davis made a 3-pointer with less than one minute remaining, the first of his career. ... Toronto used five relievers while pulling off the second-biggest comeback in franchise history on Friday night, rallying from an 8-0 deficit to a 14-9 win.Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Teddy Purcell scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout as the Edmonton Oilers rallied for a 5-4 win over the Washington Capitals. Edmonton scored twice late in the third period to tie the game, and Purcell gave them the win when he buried a wrister past Braden Holtby. Purcell, Derek Roy, Nikita Nikitin and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins all scored in regulation for the Oilers, who have won their last two. Viktor Fasth stopped 20 shots. We can definitely take some positives out of this, said Edmonton head coach Todd Nelson. It was a good character win. The guys stuck with it. Alex Ovechkin scored twice for the Capitals, who have dropped three straight, Nicklas Backstrom and Jay Beagle also lit the lamp, while Holtby allowed four goals on 31 shots. We had this game in pretty good control and then we played that way, said Holtby. Its frustrating and not how we want to play, myself included. Purcell brought the Oilers within 4-3 on a snap shot from the left circle that beat Holtby over his glove with 4:11 to play, and Nugennt-Hopkins tied the contest with 1:07 left and Fasth on the bench for an extra attacker on a wrister from the right circle. Each round of the playoffs, I forecast the round simply by using shots on goal and goaltender save percentage to come up with a baseline for the series. Barry Sanders Jersey . Its not intended to be some magical formula and doesnt apply any context, like, for example, taking injuries into account. This method was 5-3 in the first round and is currently 2-1 in the second round, with the Kings favoured entering their series against Anaheim (Game Seven goes tonight in Anaheim). More on context in a moment. The expected goals for each team in the series are determined by taking each teams shots for and against over the course of the season, as well as through the first round of the playoffs, and splitting the difference. So, for example, the New York Rangers, over the regular season and playoffs have averaged 32.9 shots on goal per game and the Montreal Canadiens have allowed 31.0 shots on goal per game; the average of those two numbers, 31.95 shots, is the number that is then multiplied by (1 - the opposing goaltenders save percentage) to determine an expected goals per game for the Bruins. Finally, the number is multiplied by seven to indicate an expected goal total for a seven-game series. Theres no guarantee that scoring more goals in a series will result in winning four games first, but the odds certainly favour the team that scores more. So, lets see how the numbers shake out for the Conference Finals: Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Montreal 28.7 31.0 Carey Price .927 15.92 N.Y. Rangers 32.9 29.6 Henrik Lundqvist .922 16.33 Verdict: This series projects to be very closely contested. Through the first two rounds this year, only the two Los Angeles series projected to have a closer differential than the forecasted 0.41 goals between the Rangers and Canadiens, and both of those series were seven-gamers. Montreal has been a subpar puck possession team this year, but it turns out that they have a great goaltender and a dangerous power play, one that was 32% (8-for-25) against Boston. Knock off a few power play goals or give Price a save percentage below the .936 that he posted against the Bruins and it would be easy enough to see Boston in this spot. As for the Rangers, they were a strong puck possession club during the season that eliminated Pittsburgh despite losing the possession game to the Penguins in Round Two. The Rangers also have the benefit of good goaltending, as they rallied from a three-games-to-one series deficit, as Henrik Lundqvist stopped 102 of 105 shots (.971 SV%) in the last three Rangers wins. It would be too simple to suggest that goaltending determines this series, since both Price and Lunqvist are among the best, so there are other factors to consider. Both teams top-scoring forwards havent produced in the postseason. No one on the Rangers has more than Brad Richards nine points in 14 games and Rick Nash has yet to score a goal. Montreals big goal-scorers, Thomas Vanek and Max Pacioretty, combined to score four goals in Game Six and Seven against Boston, after combining for four in the first nine games of the playoffs. The lack of a go-to-scorer for both teams has emphasized the team approach. For Montreal, Lars Eller, Brendan Gallagher, Daniel Briere, Dale Weise and Rene Bourque are among those that have risen to the occasion at times in the playoffs, while the Rangers supporting cast of Benoit Pouliot, Derick Brassard and Carl Hagelin has been able to score just enough for the Blueshirts to reach the Conference Final. If there is a single non-goaltender with the power to shift the series, it could be Montreals P.K. Subban, the top-scoring defenceman in the playoffs who has been in the middle of just about everything that happens with the Canadiens. If Subban is great, that alone could be enough to overcome the slight statistical disadvantage in this forecast. Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Chicago 32.4 27.7 Corey Crawford .919 17.64 Los Angeles 31.5 26.9 Jonathan Quick .915 16.78 Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Chicago 32.4 27.7 Corey Crawford .919 10.71 Anaheim 30.7 28.8 John Gibson .950 16.56 Verdict: Since there isnt much of a window between the second round ending, Friday night, and the Conference Final round beginning, Saturday at 1:00 pm ET, were going to look at both options in the Western Conference. Chicago hasnt even played their best hockey in the postseason, yet its still been good enough to dispatch St. Louis and Minnesota. Corey Crawford deserves some credit, because his .931 save percentage in this years playoffs is right on track with what he did last year (.932) on the way to the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup. Chicago was a dominant possession team during the regular season, second only to Los Angeles in Fenwick Close, but havent held that same edge in the playoffs. Better opposition, and all that. The same could be said for the Kings, who earned 56.7% of the unblocked 5-on-5 shot attempts during the regular season, but havent held that same territorial dominance in the playoffs. The interesting thing is that, while hes had some strong games in the playoffs -- both this year and historically -- Jonathan Quick hasnt been much better than average this year. Its reasonable enough to forecast the Blackhawks to survive that possible matchup, and not just because we know the Blackhawks will for sure be in the Conference Final. When it comes to breaking down the Chicago-Anaheim series, the model gets busted by Ducks rookie goalie John Gibson. Its one thing to have a goalie that has played a grand total of six games in the NHL as the starter, but his .950 save percentage in those games, stopping 171 of 180 shots, is a completely unsustainable level of play. Thing is, unsustainable levels of play can get a team through a playoff series. Gibson was a wildcard injection into the second round, against Los Angeles, after Frederik Andersen was injured, and gives the Ducks a chance in Game Seven. However, its not remotely reasonable forecast to suggest that the Ducks would be 5.85 goals ahead of the Blackhawks in a head-to-head seven-game series. The Ducks arent as strong a possession team as Los Angeles, or Chicago, and have relied on extraordinary shooting percentage, in addition to their hot goalie. Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork. Davide Zappacosta Jersey .com) - The Milwaukee Brewers announced Friday that manager Ron Roenicke will return next season. Roenickes club option for 2015 was exercised during spring training, but his job status came into question after a late-season collapse cost the Brewers a playoff spot. The Brewers were 51-32 and led the National League Central by 6 1/2 games on June 28, but wound up finishing third in the division and six games back in the wild card race at 82-80. Roenicke, 58, has compiled a 335-313 record during his four seasons at the helm. In his first year in 2011, he led the Brewers to a franchise-record 96 wins and a division title. The news wasnt as good for two members of Roenickes staff, as hitting coach Johnny Narron and first base/infield coach Garth Iorg were not retained. Over the course of the last few weeks, we have evaluated the work of Ron and his coaches and believe that this is the best course of action to take, Brewers president of baseball operations and general manager Doug Melvin said in a statement. We appreciate the work that Johnny and Garth did for us through the years, and moves like these are never easy to make. We have already started reviewing our player personnel and will continue to address the factors that led to our disappointing finish to the season. Pitching coach Rick Kranitz, bench coach Jerry Narron, third base coach Ed Sedar, outfield coach John Shelby, bullpen coach Lee Tunnell and coach Mike Guerrero also will return in 2015. JOHNS, N. ATLANTA -- Jeff Locke attempted to shrug off an ugly loss as "just another game that didnt go your way." With the Pirates in a tight division race, however, it was much more. Locke gave up six runs in only four innings and the Pirates missed a chance to move up in the NL Central race, falling to the Atlanta Braves 6-2 on Wednesday night. It marked the second time in five September starts Locke (7-6) failed to last longer than four innings. He allowed 13 baserunners -- eight hits and five walks -- in the short start. Locke said he struggled "pretty much the whole game, really." Manager Clint Hurdle said Lockes pitches were "up in the zone" and he lacked consistency with his fastball and secondary pitches. "So it was tough for him out there," Hurdle said. The Pirates, who clinched a playoff spot on Tuesday night, stayed 1 1/2 games behind division-leading St. Louis, which was beaten by the Cubs. Pittsburgh lost for only the fourth time in its last 19 games. Hurdle wouldnt say if the start could affect Lockes role in the playoffs. "You know what, were not even there," Hurdle said. "Well have those conversations when we need to. Thats not a question Im going to answer tonight. When we sit down, well look at the volume of work and well look at matchups." Andrew McCutchen had two hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning after Atlanta led 6-0. The Pirates had two baserunners in the ninth before Braves closer Craig Kimbrel struck out McCutchen and Travis Snider for his 45th save. "We still battled," McCutchen said. "We still fought at the end." Pittsburgh catcher Russell Martin left the game in the fifth inning with tightness in his left hamstring. "I didnt tweak it; its just tight," Martin said, adding it was "a smart and cautious decision" to leave the game and guard against a more serious hamstring injury. Justin Upton hit a two-run homer and pitcher Julio Teheran and Emilio Bonifacio each had two-run singles as Atlanta ended a five-game losing streak. Teheran (14-13) allowed six hits and two runs in five innings. The Braves improved their dismal September record to 5-16. Their six runs matched their combined output in the five straight losses. Pittsburgh lost a day after its clubhouse ccelebration at Turner Field, where champagne and beer flowed freely. Tiemoue Bakayoko Jersey. The Pirates wrapped up their post-season berth exactly one year after clinching a place in the 2013 playoffs to end a 21-year drought. McCutchen drove in Starling Marte, who had two hits, with his 25th homer. Christian Bethancourt hit two ground-rule doubles for Atlanta. UP, UP AND AWAY Upton set a career high with his 28th homer. He has 99 RBIs, also a career high, and has been a highlight of a bad season for Atlanta hitters. GOOD FRIENDS Locke and Atlantas Jason Heyward lived together when the two were beginning their professional careers at Danville in the Braves farm system. Locke said he and Heyward remain good friends and talk or text regularly. Heyward had no hits in three at-bats against Locke. ADDITION The Pirates claimed right-hander Chaz Roe off waivers from the New York Yankees. Roe had been designated for assignment by the Yankees on Sunday. The 27-year-old Roe began the season with the Marlins before being acquired by the Yankees on August 31. He made three appearances with New York this season, and also posted 14 saves in 47 games (64.0ip) at Triple-A New Orleans. Roe will take the roster spot of right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton, who was placed on the 60-day D.L. with right hip inflammation. TRAINERS ROOM Pirates: Martin singled in the second inning and seemed to hurt himself when he returned to first base on a pickoff throw. He remained on one knee for several seconds before rising slowly and said after the game "it looked funny" because his foot slipped off the bag. Braves: 3B Chris Johnson had two hits and scored two runs before he left the game in the sixth with a lower back strain. ... C Evan Gattis is expected to make his first start since Sept. 7 on Thursday night but likely wont play the full game. He has been held out with strep throat and a kidney stone. UP NEXT Pirates: Edinson Volquez (12-7) will start on Thursday night in the final game of the four-game series. He hasnt faced the Braves this season and is 2-3 against Atlanta in six career starts. Braves: RHP David Hale, replacing Mike Minor in the rotation, will make his first start since June 28 in the Braves final home game of the season. Hale (4-4) has pitched in relief in 39 of his 44 games. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Giovani Lo Celso Jersey . -- Jameis Winston was a show-stopper early and a spectator late -- not a whole lot different from his first game. Winston accounted for three touchdowns, Florida States four tailbacks all scored and the 10th-ranked Seminoles routed Nevada 62-7 Saturday. No doubt, Winstons home debut was nearly as flawless as his season opener. The freshman from Hueytown, Ala., completed 15 of 18 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a score, capping a third-quarter TD barrage that turned a close game into a lopsided affair. "We have great players on offence that can make big plays at any time," FSU running back James Wilder Jr. said. The Seminoles (2-0) thumped Pitt 41-13 on the road 12 days ago, a game in which Winston grabbed headlines with a 356-yard, four-TD passing performance that included a school record for completion percentage. Some wondered what he would do for an encore. Well, he had an early hiccup -- a second-quarter interception that Nevada (1-2) turned into a 7-3 lead -- but he responded better than anyone could have expected. He completed his final 13 passes for 184 yards and two scores. "When the adversity came, we knew we had to go higher," Winston said. "Thats what most of the players were telling me, This prepared you for the future. I was like, We dont want to see that in the future guys. ... Weve got to start fast and keep grinding." The Seminoles grounded Nevada into submission. Devonta Freeman ran nine times for 109 yards and a touchdown. Wilder -- the other half of "Wild and Free" -- added 45 yards and a score. Karlos Williams may have been the most impressive of the bunch. The former safety, who moved to offence after the opener, ran eight times for 110 yards and a score. His 65-yard scamper made it 31-7 early in the third quarter. "Im not trying to say that I was rubbing a crystal ball, but that guy is a talented cat," coach Jimbo Fisher said. "Hes very dynamic with the ball. Hes big, hes strong and explosive. Hes natural. When he gets in space, he can hit home runs and hes hard to tackle because hes a big, physical guy there, too. ... Karlos will provide us a very big piece of the puzzle, in my opinion, as the year goes on." No one is more key than Winston. He proved to be a threat on the ground, too. He scored on a nifty 10-yard bootleg in the third -- his final play of the day. Winston watched the final 20 minutes from the sideline. He had a front-row seat for fourth-string tailback Ryan Green, who ended up rushing five times for 78 yards and a score. The Seminoles were a little out of rhythm early, but responded in a big way. They scored the final 59 points, including four touchdowns on their first four possessions in the third. None of those drives lasted more than two minutes, and the first two took a combined 33 seconds off the clock. Freeman went 60 yards on the first play of the second half -- Wilder dominated a defender for the key block -- and then scored from 8 yards. Williams got on the field next, taking his first offensive touch and outrunning defenders for a 65-yard score. The Seminoles were just getting started, too. Wilder found the end zone on the next drive, and then Winston capped the offensive barrage with his run. He faked out all 11 defenders and maybe even a few cameramen before coasting across the goal line. "If they respect his game and dont respect ours, obviously you can see how we can run the ball," Wilder said. "Its kind of a disadvantage for defences. Theres not really much they can do." The Seminoles finished with 617 yards, including 377 on the ground. Sure, Nevada and Pitt are a long ways from Clemson and Miami, but Winstons poise and presence -- on the road and at home -- are good signs for a team with high hopes this season. Nevadas bigger problem was on offence, where quarterback Cody Fajardo didnt even play because of a sprained knee. Devin Combs got the start and completed 6 of 9 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown. He was limping late in the first half and was replaced to start the third. Tyler Stewart played the second half, completing 7 of 15 passes for 49 yards, with an interception. "By no stretch of the imagination are we making any excuses and were not hiding from this," Nevada coach Brian Polian said. "We are going to be honest about it and then we are going to bury it and we are going to get ready to play in our league." Neymar Jersey . Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork. Jackson Martinez Jersey .com) - Quarterback Cardale Jones will return to Ohio State next season. Jones made the announcement Thursday afternoon at Ginn Academy in Cleveland. My decision was very simple. Im gonna return next year for school, said Jones. The announcement was kind of a surprise after Jones said he will be making a life changing decision on his Twitter account earlier Thursday. Many took Jones tweet as if he was going to enter the 2015 NFL draft. Being a first-round draft pick means nothing to me without my education, said Jones. Jones helped the Buckeyes win the national championship on Monday against Oregon in only his third career start, throwing for 242 yards with a touchdown while adding a rushing score in the 42-20 rout. He began the 2014 season third on the depth chart behind Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett, but was pressed into duty when both were hurt. They see him as the saviour, the young star they need to carry the franchise forward and help Kobe Bryant restore the teams pride. Is it a pipe dream or a real possibility? Its unlikely anyone will know until 2015, when Love can become a free agent and the Lakers will have money to throw at him. In the meantime, Love gave those suffering Lakers fans another performance to drool over. Love had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for his second career triple-double and the Minnesota Timberwolves set a franchise record for points with a 143-107 victory over the Lakers on Friday night. "Everybody wants someone like that," Lakers coach Mike DAntoni said before the game. "When youre talking about one of the best players in the league, yeah that makes sense." Nikola Pekovic scored 26 points on 9-for-10 shooting in his first game back from an ankle injury and Love hit three of five 3-pointers in just three quarters of work. Kevin Martin scored 17 points for the Wolves, who led by 19 points in the first quarter, 37 in the second and 40 in the third. Steve Nash made a surprise appearance for the Lakers, picking up four points and six assists in 14 minutes of just his 12th game of the season. It was about the only notable development for the Lakers, who lost to the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night, then allowed the Timberwolves to shoot 67.1 per cent, the highest any team in the league has shot in a game this season. "Terrible right now, man," Lakers guard Nick Young said. "Its a bad feeling." Love put on a clinic during a masterful first quarter, scoring 15 points, hitting two of three 3-pointers, grabbing five rebounds and dishing four assists. He threw one of his trademark 60-foot outlet passes to Kevin Martin for a layup, threw down a dunk, hit a 3 and finished a fast break during a 20-3 run that gave Minnesota a 26-7 lead. He grabbed his 10th rebound of the game just before the third-quarter buzzer,, and his teammates leaped off the bench and cheered his achievement. Felipe Aguilar Jersey. "Even with the team they have now, its still nice to be a team thats been a heavyweight for a very long time," Love said of the Lakers. It was the quintessential Love performance -- versatile and punishing from inside and out, unselfish and relentless. And it is everything the Lakers are missing right now. Kobe Bryant has missed most of the season with injuries, Nash is on his last legs and the Lakers are desperate for a star to carry them forward when Bryant, who will start a new two-year contract next season, decides to retire. Love went to UCLA and his father, Stan, played for the Lakers in the 1970s. Love can opt out of his contract after next season, at which point the Lakers will have enough cap room to sign him to a maximum contract. The Timberwolves remain confident that they will be able to do enough this off-season to upgrade the roster to convince Love, who has not been to the playoffs in his six seasons, to stay. President of basketball operations Flip Saunders has told teams calling about trading for Love to not even bother asking. The Wolves can also pay him about $26.5 million more than any other team. "My parents lived there and they had me there, so its not my fault," Love said of the fascination with him in Los Angeles. "I dont really care about that right now. I just go out there and play and dont really worry about it." DAntoni coached Love with Team USA, so hes well versed in his abilities. "He was a big piece in what we were doing and obviously hes a big piece here," DAntoni said. "Guys a good player. Wherever he goes, hes going to be good." NOTES: Kent Bazemore scored 21 points and Jodie Meeks scored 19 for the Lakers. ... The Timberwolves topped 40 points in the first quarter for the fifth time this season. ... Xavier Henry sat out for the Lakers with a sore knee. ... Timberwolves PG Ricky Rubio had 10 points, six assists, six rebounds and one steal, which tied Tyrone Corbins franchise for steals in a season with 175. DUBLIN, Ireland -- Europe captain Paul McGinley selected Sam Torrance and Des Smyth as two of his vice captains on Thursday for this years Ryder Cup against United States at Gleneagles. Mark Lowe Tigers Jersey . Torrance captained Europe to victory in the 2002 event, when McGinley holed the winning putt at the Belfry. The 61-year-old Smyth has played in the Ryder Cup twice and was Ian Woosnams assistant in the 2006 competition at the K Club. "They first came to mind to me when I was put in position as Ryder Cup captain last January," McGinley said. "These two men have been a sounding board for me, both personally and professionally, and have proved time and again to me with their ability and passion and judgment that they are ideal for the role." McGinley said his other assistants will be announced after the team is formalized in September. The 2014 Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 26-28. Europe will be defending the trophy for the second time after winning 14 1/2-13 1/2 at Celtic Manor in 2010 and by the same score at Medinah in 2012. McGinley has known Smyth since he was a teenager and described his fellow Irishman as a "mentor" during his professional career. "In many ways, he was a natural choice for me," McGinley said. "As a vice captain to Ian Woosnam at the K Club, I found him to be very inspirational, astute, a voice of reason with great clarity of thought." Torrances appointment ensures there will be Scottish representation in the European team at Gleneagles. He has been a close friend of McGinley since the 2002 Ryder Cup, when Torrances decision to stack the top order of the singles with his best players made an impression on the current captain. "I felt, tactically, he made so many right calls, he understood the players, what the Ryder Cup was about," McGinley said. "His ability to motivate the players and communicate with them had a lasting impression on me." Torrance said he and Smyth would act as a buffer between the players and McGinley. "If I could do a tenth for Pauls team of what he did for my team," Torrance said, "we will both be very happy men." The head coach of the Canadas womens soccer team learned more about his players Sunday, and for long stretches, he didnt like what he saw. The Canadians were sloppy and plodding for long periods while also failing to capitalize on their numerous scoring chances in settling for a 0-0 draw with Mexico in an international friendly. Ranked seventh in the world, Canada won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and is the host country of the 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup. Mexico, meanwhile, is in rebuild mode and sits 24th in the FIFA rankings. "You expect to beat Mexico, no disrespect," said Herdman. "(Canada) is the seventh-ranked team in the world, bronze medallists. I still think were three or four players (away from being) that team again. Hopefully we can either find those players or get those players back. "I think the Mexicans were worth the score today. They werent miles away from Canada." Herdman was especially displeased with the tail end of the opening 45 minutes. "We just ran out of ideas. That first half, I felt sorry for people watching at home or in the stands. It just wasnt an inspirational or exciting performance," he said. "I think the players knew at halftime that people had paid some money to watch them play, given their Sundays up, and they had to give a bit more. "Its almost like we thought this was going to be easy for some reason." The fact that Mexico wasnt far off will be troubling for Herdman, who has been experimenting with new tactics while giving younger players a chance to show they belong. Some failed to impress. "I just know how much that shirt is worth to people," said Herdman. "If you get a chance to play in front of 20,000 people ... I just expect players to give everything theyve physically got, mentally got. "If youre going to play for Canada, you better be bloody good ... and be good every game." One of the players who caught Herdmans eye was 16-year-old defender Sura Yekka, who won her second cap. "She brought a real bright spot," he said. "If anything, she pretty much showed the way in terms of a positive attitude to really take it to Mexico and I think a couple players fed off her energy." Herdman has brought Kara Lang back into the fold after she retired nearly three years ago because of two serious knee injuries. While the 27-year-old is still a long way off from seeing game action, its clear that outside of captain Christine Sinclair, Canada is still starving for goals. "It tells you a bit of a story of what we need to add too this team," said Herdman of the 0-0 scoreline. Paul Thompson Golden Knights Jersey. Canada had a chance to grab the lead in the 48th minute, but Sophie Schmidt sliced a cross from Brittany Baxter over the Mexican goal. Kaylyn Kyle then had a golden opportunity in alone in the 53rd, only to have Mexican goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago make a save before stopping Emily Zurrers effort on the ensuing corner. Santiago came up huge for her team again on Sinclair in the 78th minute before a Mexican defender blocked Lauren Sesselmanns rebound chance. Santiago had Sinclairs number once more in the 87th, stopping her effort with a diving save as Canada failed to find the elusive goal. "It was a big challenge to come here and close the year with a good performance," said Mexican head coach Leonardo Cuellar. "Obviously were still far away from where we would like to be." Sundays crowd was vocal, with pockets of Mexican supporters scattered across B.C. Place Stadium, which will be the site of the final in 2015. Coming off a drab 3-0 victory over South Korea in Edmonton last month, Canada had some early chances before goalkeeper Erin McLeod was forced to make a sprawling save in the 10th minute off Mexicos Guadalupe Worbis. Baxter, formerly Britanny Timko prior to her marriage this summer, put the ball in the back of the Mexican goal behind Santiago in the 13th minute, but she was ruled offside. McLeod had to be sharp again in the 15th when Worbis, far and away Mexicos most dangerous threat in the first half, stepped around a Canadian defender and fired another shot on target. Sinclair then rounded the Mexican keeper a minute later, but couldnt get her shot past an on-rushing defender. Wilkinson limped off in the 28th minute and made way for Yekka, whose energy down the right side gave Canada some life. Mexico had a dangerous cross in the 29th minute, but Zurrer did well to head the ball behind for a corner that Canada would deal with to end the threat. Despite Sundays performance, Herdman has 18 months until the start of the World Cup to figure out his best lineup and formation. "Today told us about players. WINNIPEG -- Buck Pierce wasnt out of football long. Dikembe Mutombo Jersey . On Tuesday, the former quarterback retired following nine CFL campaigns. Three days later, he returned to Winnipeg -- where he spent three-plus seasons -- as the Blue Bombers running backs coach. Rookie head coach Mike OShea said Friday adding Pierce to his staff was a no-brainer. "When Buck retired, it came up as part of my multiple conversations per day with Kyle (Bombers GM Kyle Walters)," OShea said. "Then it went to how good a guy Buck is, his experience and the value of adding a CFL quarterback to our staff. "The running backs position hadnt been filled and its an entry-level position for guys who want to get into coaching and learn the daily rigours of becoming a professional football coach. Kyle and I got on the phone with Buck and he was very receptive. He wants to coach, he loves the CFL game and it just made sense on all levels to have Buck Pierce on our staff." The six-foot-two, 195-pound Pierce began his CFL career with the B.C. Lions, spending five seasons in Vancouver before signing with Winnipeg as a free agent following the 09 season. Pierce, 32, remained with the Bombers until last September when he was traded back to B.C. Injuries limited Pierce to 67 starts in 125 career CFL games although he did post a solid 64.2 completion percentage, with 76 TDs and 63 interceptions. He also averaged 7.2 yards per rushing attempt with 14 touchdowns while also committing 18 fumbles. Despite being plagued by an assortment of injuries, there was never any question about Pierces heart, toughness or character. Regardless of the ailment, he always returned to the field for his teammates. And embarking on a coaching career in Winnipeg makes perfect sense. Not only did Pierce play for the Bombers, his fiancee is also from the Manitoba capital. But OShea, a former standout linebacker who became Torontos special-teams co-ordinator following his stellar career with the Argonauts, said becoming a coach can present challenges for some former players. "Im sure Buck recognized early in his career the coaches were there before he was and were there after he left," OShea said. "Its always an eye-opener in terms of the planning and the number of tasks that are involved. "But as the staff comes together in the off-season and gets going through the daily routine and has the specific tasks theyre charged with Im sure hell get it all figured out quickly." OShea believes adding a former CFL quarterback to his coaching staff will provide added benefits as well. "These guys play quarterback for a reason, they have the ability to take in all that information, process it and then put it all back out there," OShea said. "Hell obviously do some work figuring out drills and finding out what his position group needs on a daily basis but hell also give that group a different perspective and understanding about how other positions are looking at the game and not just through the running backs eyes. "Any time a player can gain a better understanding of what the other positions are thinking out there is a good thing. That kind of knowledge only helps players produce." Notes: The Bombers signed quarterback Robert Marve and receiver Mario Urrutia on Friday. The six-foot-one, 212-pound Marve played collegiately at Miami (2007-08) and Purdue (2010-2012). The six-foot-six, 238-pound Urrutia was a 2008 seventh-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals out of the University of Louisville. He also spent time with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as well as the Arena Football Leagues Utah Blaze. Sadly not here though, But when the nation awoke Tuesday morning little did we know then what a most eventful post Labour Day week in soccer lay in store for this most glorious land we are all privileged to call home. Rather ominously it began with yet more revelations the global match fixing industry had uprooted itself from its Malaysian base for a profitable summer visit to southern Ontario. World renowned match fixing super sleuth Declan Hill, who himself hails from that very same Canadian province, would have taken no pleasure in uttering the words he did on the radio Tuesday afternoon. Like all successful criminals, the global money printing syndicates had identified a marshmallow soft target. For all the good it has done for football development in the region, the CSL has reportedly become a favoured destination for these criminal tourists. What makes this all the more remarkable is that this is happening, almost encouraged to occur, right under the noses of one of the globes most recognized law enforcement agencies. Hill wasnt finished, He signed off his blog posting with the promise of yet more revelations to come. In the interim, its well past time for the RCMP to get off its high horses and intervene whilst getting the full cooperation of all the relevant Canadian soccer authorities. Meanwhile in a Toronto suburb, Toronto FCs Kevin Payne went to bed Tuesday night in the knowledge his brief time in the city of Canadas original MLS franchise had come to an all too familiar, highly embarrassing end. The well-oiled revolving Princess Gate door has become Canadian soccers version of Buckingham Palaces annual changing of the guard. Part of MLSs original fabric, Payne spent way too much of his time explaining himself. Banging on about the difficulties and challenges, than actually finding the required solutions. Let alone set about signing the required winning talent Toronto FCs fantastic fan base surely deserve. If the sophomore Impact have been able to sign the likes of Alessandro Nesta, Marco Di Vaio and Matteo Ferrari as Payne wiled away his final DC days. Then under his TFC watch, sign players of the Hernan Bernarello and Adran Lopez calibre and pedigree - why cant an individual Don Garber describes as one of MLSs most legendry executives do the same? Bluntly put and as I stated when Payne was appointed as TFC Governor General last November, the leagues global reach has moved well on and firmly away from its original structures. Ones that Paayne so effortlessly exploited early on in his almost two decade spell at DC United. Emmanuel Mudiay Jersey. Far easier to scout and sign the best the US soccer college system produces than it is to swim with the sharks and pariahs of world football, hey Kevin? The print hadnt even dried on the Toronto FC official statement announcing KPs demise, when the world famous bait-and-switch PR card was played by MLSE. The conversation immediately reverting to the possibility of a TFC and Argos time share. On hearing this, my mind immediately shifted to a previous life, and another senior soccer executive who goes by the KP moniker. Stand up Kevin Pipe. CSA Chief Operation Officer who in an act of sheer desperation back in 2005 offered the Toronto Argonauts everything but the actual goal nets which were required to build a soccer stadium, as ways to ensure Toronto became the capital city of FIFA Under-20 World Cup Canada 2007. We all know now of course how that turned out. I wont easily forget that now legendry November 2005 afternoon at Toronto City Hall as I listened in on-line to a rather heated debate as approvals were given for the construction of the so called national soccer stadium on city owned land at Exhibition Place. A gift horse MLSE welcomed with open arms. Meanwhile outside of Toronto, many of the most influential stakeholders of Canadian soccer were left furious with the outcome as $20 million or so of federally donated tax dollars were fully placed in the bank account marked; Stadium Construction. Pipe rightfully lost his job, Toronto got its soccer stadium where a few months on from completion a very certain future son-in-law of Diego Maradona, Sergio Kun Agüero scored one of the goals in the Under-20 final as Argentina reigned supreme down by the lake Ontario water in summer 07. This week we got a very rude reminder, part of Pipes tainted legacy has ensured it will be MLSE and not the CSA who decides if a ground share is a viable option at what is supposed to be the national soccer stadium. The mere fact it is the Argos who toyed and ultimately let down our national body back in the mid 2000s makes the possibility for a TFC and Argos marriage for me all that more difficult to fathom. Mercifully the emotional roller coaster work week for Canadian soccer ended on a highly memorable, vastly more enjoyable note. The most famous Geordie in womens world football committing himself to the WNT cause all the way to 2020 as a very visionary CSA saw off any advances for Herdman - for a soon to be celebrating 150th birthday celebrating English FA. All this coming against a backdrop of the MNT Floro era getting under way this week in Valencia, Spain. Put that in your Pipe and smoke it. HOUSTON - The top spot in the AFC South will be on the line when Houston native Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts shoot for their fourth straight win when they take on the Texans at NRG Stadium. Joe Morgan Jersey . The defending division champion Colts have rebounded from a slow 0-2 start with three consecutive wins, including last weekends 20-13 triumph over Baltimore. Indianapolis has also generally dominated the Texans over the years, winning three consecutive games in the rivalry and compiling a gaudy 20-4 overall record against Houston. Meanwhile, the Colts have also excelled on short weeks, winning nine straight games when playing on Thursday despite the lack of preparation time. Its annoying for players, Texans star running back Arian Foster said this week when asked about playing on Thursday. I dont know one player that likes it. I really dont know a fan that likes it, either. I think its just the leagues way of trying to generate more revenue. Nobody is ready to play physically after a Sunday game. But youve got to go out there and do it. No team has figured out how to do it better than the Colts, who are 11-1-1 in Thursday games. The only thing trending in Houstons direction is the fact that the home team has won four of the first five Thursday matchups in 2014. Last weekend Luck passed for a touchdown and ran for another score against the Ravens, connecting on 32-of-49 passes for 312 yards, his fourth 300-yard passing performance in five tries this season. The only negative aspect of the ledger for Luck was two interceptions. Ahmad Bradshaw added 68 yards on the ground but his fumble inside two minutes left nearly cost the game for the Colts. Its huge to survive our mistakes in a sense, said Luck. Its the epitome of a team football game, of a defense lifting us up in a sense. We made our plays enough to get a win obviously. The Texans, meanwhile, are coming off a tough loss in Dallas, losing a Lone Star State matchup with the Cowboys in overtime. Dan Bailey kicked the game-winning 49-yard field goal in the extra frame to lift Dallas. The Texans had scored the last 10 points of regulation to force OT, but punted on the opening possession of the extra session. The Cowboys DeMarco Murray picked up 11 yards on a 3rd-and-1, and on an ensuing 3rd-and-8, Tony Romo lofted a rainbow along the left sideline for Dez Bryant. Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph had tight coverage on Bryant, who ran a stop-and-go route, but Bryant was able to reach over top of his helmet to make a spectacular grab. It was the play of the game, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. I dont know if theres a better guy in the league that can make those kind of contested catches than Dez Bryant. Bailey, who missed a 53-yard field goal on the final play of regulation to snap his streak of 30 consecutive field goals, was able to split the uprights this time from the left hash with 7:45 on the clock. Foster carried the ball 23 times for 157 yards and two scores for the Texans (3-2), who have dropped two of three since beginning the year 2-0. Our defense did a good job of holding us in there, Texans head coach Bill OBrien said. We just didnt do enough offensively. Ryan Fitzpatrick was 16-of-25 for 154 yards with an interception, DeAndre Hopkins caught six passes for 63 yards and Andre Johnson hauled in five balls for 58 yards in defeat. No loss feels good, but, like I said, we have a quick turnaround, OBrien continued. Weve got to get better, and weve got to get better fast because we havent played a division game yet and we have a very big division game coming up on Thursday night in front of our home fans. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Luck and the Colts have gotten fat over the past three weeks thanks to a fortuitous turn in their schedule with two lightly-regarded opponents -- Jacksonville and Tennessee -- followed by a home game against Baltimore. That said you can only play who is put in front of you and Indianapolis has handled its business, outscoring those three opponents by a combined 105-47 margin or by an average of 35-16. The Colts defense, which allowed 409.5 yards per game in the first two games of the season, has settled down and surrendered only 297.3 per game since. The unit mustered just one sack and one turnover in the first two and had generated 11 sacks and nine takeaways during its three-game run with outside linebacker Bjoern Werner registering a career-high two sacks last weekend. The good thing about the Colts is that were very familiar with them, Texans tackle Duane Brown said. Of course you have a different game plan than weve had in years past, but as far as the personnel and things like that we kind of know what to expect. Of course, the real strength of the Colts lies in their QB, Luck, who pilots an offense that is second overall in the NFL with 439.6 YPG and tops in passing offense (321.8 YPG). Luck himself leads the NFL with 1,617 passing yards and 14 touchdowns but the free thrower is also tops in interceptions with six. With seven catches for 77 yards against the Ravens, veteran Indy wide receiver Reggie Wayne (13,950) surpassed Hall of Famer Cris Carter for the ninth-most receiving yards of all-time. Wayne needs 55 yards against the Texans to surpass another Hall of Famer, James Lofton, for eighth place. Wayne will also look to extend his streak of impressive performances against AFC South opponents. Since divisional realignment in 2002, Wayne leads all active players in receptions (376) and receiving yards (5,077) against his own division. The impressive Houston defense is led by All-Pro defensive lineman J.J. Watt, who has two sacks, three batdowns, an interception return for a TD, and an NFL- high 16 QB hits through five outings, and leads the NFL with 12 takeaways. Safeties Kendrick Lewis and D.J. Swearinger both have three forced fumbles, tied for the most in the NFL, and inside linebacker Brian Cushing leads the unit with 45 tackles. Offensively the Texans will continue to rely on their own veteran receiver, Johnson, who needs just 19 receiving yards to become the 15th player in NFL history to reach 13,000, as well as Foster, who leads the AFC since 2010 with 5,210 rushing yards and 45 touchdowns, including 752 yards (125.3 per game) and six touchdowns in six career matchups against Indianapolis. OVERALL ANALYSIS History says the Colts are usually the better prepared team on a short week and there is little reason to expect that to change this time around. Indianapolis has never lost on NFL Networks Thursday Night Football, posting a 7-0 record dating back to 2007 with six of those seven wins coming on the road. You realize once the game starts, its football, said Luck. Theres no use complaining or whining about anything. Its what you do. Mike Hogan is the play-by-play voice of the Toronto Argonauts on TSN 1050 Radio and contributes articles about the team for TSN. Terrance Mitchell Jersey .ca. On draft day, he was granted the rare opportunity to report on this years draft from inside the Argos war room. "Youre only as good as your Canadian talent." Its a well-worn cliche among those who follow the Canadian Football League, but it happens to be true. The stakes are high in the annual selection process, so the tension at the Argonaut head office in downtown Toronto was understandably high, particularly as it became closer to the beginning of the draft. Argo general manager Jim Barker sat down with TSN.ca at 4:30 pm et, two and a half hours before the first round commenced, to discuss what could and could not be included in this article. The only restriction was that the names of any players not drafted by Toronto, or names of players involved in trade discussion would not be used. Anything else was fair game. At that point, Barker explained that a trade with Edmonton had been completed. The Boatmen had acquired the third overall pick in the draft and intended to select Anthony Coombs if he was available. Barker had acquired the No. 3 and No. 21 picks in exchange for the No. 6 and No. 15 picks, as well as veteran import offensive tackle Tony Washington. The two teams also exchanged the rights of one player each from their negotiation list. The trade would not be announced until later, but was not contingent upon Coombs being available. The Argonauts love Coombs, a running back from the University of Manitoba. One person inside the room confided that it was a unanimous feeling about Coombs, and among a collection of people within an organization leading up to a draft, thats a rarity. The dye was cast. The Argos had done what they had to do, move up in the draft and get the highest pick they could without giving up too much. They had accomplished that, but now came the toughest part of the day; the waiting. The braintrust tried its best to kill time. Coaches and members of the player personnel department had already completed a mock draft and now had little to do except wait. Coaches asked questions about scheduling that they likely already knew the answer to. Some in the office watched the St. Louis Rams news conference announcing their draft picks to the media. Small talk was the order of the afternoon, and at times it seemed forced. Everybody involved was simply in the mindset that Coombs was out there, and the lead-up to finding out if he would be available with the third overall pick was, at times, excruciating. The malaise ended at 6:20pm et when a report from TSNs Farhan Lalji surfaced, indicating that the Ottawa Redblacks had traded the first overall pick in the draft to Calgary for offensive lineman Jon Gott. That announcement would ratchet up the tension in the office even higher. Would Calgary select Coombs to complement Jon Cornish? It was a possibility, and one that would do nothing to make the following minutes move any faster. At 6:35pm et, Barker and his staff met once more behind closed doors. After a few minutes, the staff emerged, grabbed a last-minute bite to eat and prepared to enter what has been dubbed the war room. In this case, the war room was on any other day an average-sized board room. By the time all had assembled, there were 13 people sitting around a table, another handful sat just behind. It was, to say the least, somewhat crowded. A high-speed fan sat on a mini fridge in the corner of the office. On the wall at that end of the room was a television, tuned to SportsCentre in anticipation of TSNs draft coverage. A collection of photographs was on one of the side walls, featuring a collection of the organizations greatest players who had been honoured as "All Time Argos". They were staring across the room at a wall featuring just the words "Toronto Argonauts. Honouring Tradition". Along the wall at the front of the room was a giant whiteboard. This would be the centre of attention for the next three hours. Along the left side of the board were the logos of the nine CFL teams. Along the top, which ran the entire length of the wall, were the numbers one to seven, representing each round. A grid pattern was drawn up with the overall number of the pick written in the top right corner. If a pick had been traded, a magnetic logo of the team that acquired that pick was placed in the lower right-hand corner. To the left of the grid was the most important aspect of the wall, the list of available players, in the order that the Argos had ranked the prospects. Each magnet has the name, school and stats of the player, with a picture added for good measure. The player atop the list was indeed Anthony Coombs. The man with the most responsibility on this night is general manager Jim Barker. Hes no stranger to the procedure, as this is his fourth draft as the Argos GM. He was also Calgarys GM, then Senior VP of Football Operations for five years before his arrival in Toronto. Also in the room with Barker was Chris Rossetti, the 23-year old who took over the reins as the teams director of player personnel this offseason, Vince Magri, the Argos Canadian scouting coordinator, Demetri Betzios, the teams U.S. scouting coordinator, as well as head coach Scott Milanovich, the members of his coaching staff, three other members of the football operations department and a reporter from TSN.ca. A speaker phone sat in the middle of the table. The teams were connected via conference call, with the league running the show. A roll call was taken as the tension continued to build. The nervousness increased even more as Barker learned of a rumour that Calgary was talking to BC about potentially moving the first overall pick in a deal. All eyes turned to the TSN broadcast and seeing Rod Black, Duane Forde, Paul LaPolice and Chris Schultz seemed to emphasize that it was time for football. The majority were glued to the screen as the Ottawa/Calgary trade was dissected. Opinions were exchanged, albeit in subdued tones, about the ability of Gott and who came out ahead in the deal. That discussion abruptly ended when CFL commissioner Mark Cohon appeared on screen and was asked about the ongoing CBA negotiations. The room was as quiet as it had been all night. Someone spoke up and asked if they should make an offer to Calgary for the top pick. It underscored how worried they were that their man may not last until the third spot. Coombs was ranked No. 5 on Fordes list of the top prospects, higher than most had him going in mock drafts, although now it didnt matter. The speculation was about to end. The CFL once again took a roll call to make sure everyone was ready to go. The procedural rules were explained and then the words that started the draft echoed through the room. "Calgary, youre on the clock". At 7:10pm et, the tension was at its highest level. Calgary was on the speaker phone and ready to make its pick. Each player had been assigned a number on a master list of draft eligible players, Coombs was number 84 on that list. The team would make its selection by giving the players number, name, position and school. John Hufnagels voice came booming through the speakers as some of the assembled Argo staff stared at the phone while others looked blankly into space. Hufnagel made the announcement that had everyone in the room holding their breath. "With the first pick of the 2014 CFL draft, the Calgary Stampeders select player number 219..." The Calgary GM didnt have to get to the name of Pierre Lavertu, the first overall pick in the draft, before a bizarre combination of excitement and relief was exhibited by those in the room. Some physically rose from their chairs, while others simply exhaled. One down, one to go. Winnipeg was now on the clock. The tension had crept back into the room. Eventually the CFL office gave the Bombers a one-minute warning. Someone evoked the name of the BC Lions again. Would they move ahead of Toronto? It was assumed the Bombers would select an offensive lineman, but if someone traded for that pick, all bets were off. There was an immediate sense of relief when the Bombers held onto the pick, and it was almost anticlimactic when the Winnipegers welcomed Matthias Goossen to the fold. There was no fist-pumping or high-fiving in Toronto, just a massive sense of relief when they realized they had their man. The trade with Edmonton had not been filed to the league. Barker didnt want to let others know he was high enough on one of the prospects to move up. The GM told director of football operations Ian Sanderson to contact the CFL to confirm the trade. It was still surprisingly quiet in the room, even though the Argos now knew they would be able to draft the player who would make or break this draft. The pick was confirmed when Chris Rossetti announced to the league something he was hoping hed have the opportunity to do. "With the third pick, the Toronto Argonauts are pleased to select player number 84, Anthony Coombs, running back, Manitoba." Smiles and laughter finally filled the room. The prospect that the football operations department firmly believed was the best pick in the draft was now a member of the Argos. A phone call was made to the newest member of the oldest pro football team to welcome him aboard. Both Jim Barker and Scott Milanovich spoke to Coombs, congratulating him and reminding him to keep working hard. Almost as soon as the pick was made, multiple teams contacted Barker to inquire if Coombs was available. It seems they were playing the same waiting game, but the Toronto GMs ability to aggressively acquire the pick he thought he needed turned out to be the difference. The discussion in the war room turned to what other teams were doing, some of the trades that were made, and what lay ahead. There was discussion about trying to move up again. At the end of the first round, there was a brief break, giving people time to grab a quick bite to eat and reflect on what had been an interesting, and very successful start to the draft. The team didnt possess a second round pick so there was some down time. Barker was inquiring to see if he could trade up. As picks were made, it was apparent that the mood in a pro draft room wasnt much different than a group of friends holding a fantasy draft. Some of the selections made by other teams were acknowledged as being very good, while others were questioned or even mocked. Another interesting aspect of the process was how good staff members were at predicting who other teams would pick. While a team would be on the clock, a staffer would mention that one of their scouts was really high on a prospect, and more often than not, that player would be selected. There was some self-congratulation based on how accurate Torontos mock draft had been. As the second round progressed, there was great surprise at some of the picks. All of a sudden, there were two names on the war room board that occupied the ninth and 10th slots, and there was now a chance that they would not be chosen before the No. 21 pick. One of the two was selected, but the other one was available when the Argos were once again informed they were on the clock. Jaskaran Dhillon, an aggressive offensive lineman from UBC, was one of three players Barker mentioned in the pre-draft interview as being someone the team would love to obtain. His name was in the 10th spot on the teams prospect list. Because they didnt have a second round pick, the Argos had to wait an hour and 23 minutes to make their second selection in the draft. They felt it was worth it. Six more players would be chosen by the Argos, including Eric Black, the younger brother of Matt Black, the teams starting safety. At 9:52pm et, the Argos night was over, and in their eyes, just as it likely was in eight other war rooms across the league, the night was a success. The room cleared out quickly, most had flights to catch the next morning to spend two more weeks with their families before returning to Toronto to prepare for training camp. He was pulled for Ray Emery after the second period. "I wasnt very good," Mason said. It wasnt entirely his fault. "We left Mase out to dry," captain Claude Giroux said, alluding to several turnovers that resulted into three goals on odd-man rushes. After a quiet first period in which Killorn scored the only goal, the teams combined for seven in a defenceless, wide-open second. Just 66 seconds after Voraceks second goal tied it at 3, Filppula scored his 18th goal on backhander off a rebound to give the Lightning the lead for good. St. Louis fired a shot past Mason for his 20th goal with 57 seconds left in the period to give Tampa its third, two-goal lead. They held onto this one. "You try to prepare the best you can to help the team win and to score 20 goals is something Im pproud of," said St. Tamba Hali Jersey. Louis, who has accomplished that 10 times in his career. Tampa defenceman Matt Carle was a plus-6 with two assists and didnt even take a shot. "He was outstanding," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. Down 3-1, the Flyers rallied when Simmonds scored a power-play goal on a rebound off Girouxs slap shot. Voracek tied it a few minutes later on a nifty goal. He took a pass from Andrej Meszaros, skated down the right side, weaved through three defenders and beat goalie Anders Lindback with a shot past his left skate. Killorn gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead less than five minutes in when he stole a pass near Philadelphias blue line, skated around defenceman Mark Streit and wristed a shot over Masons shoulder. Philadelphia missed two chances in the first period when Tye McGinn hit the crossbar Voracek hit the post during a two-man advantage. Tampa scored a pair of goals 2:07 apart early in the second sandwiched around a goal by the Flyers. Purcell started the scoring outburst with a shot from the left side that went between Masons legs. Then Voracek scored 83 seconds later on a 1-on-none breakaway after Giroux intercepted a pass and flipped him the puck. But Malone made it 3-1 on a 2-on-1 breakaway off a pass by Nate Thompson. Malone added an empty-net goal in the third. The Lightnings recent road success includes wins at Detroit, Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg. "We have a good thing going on the road lately and we hope to keep it going," defenceman Andrej Sustr. NOTES: Lightning G Ben Bishop missed his third straight game with a sprained right wrist. He could return Monday at Columbus. ... The Flyers were seeking their first 11-game home winning streak since 2003. ... Mason was yanked from a game for the third time this season. ... PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. Custom Memphis Grizzlies Jerseys . -- Rory McIlroy is 18 holes away from his first PGA Tour victory in 18 months, a chance to show the world he is back on his game. Thats not the way McIlroy views the final round at the Honda Classic. McIlroy started strong, avoided a big number with a brilliant bogey in the middle and took on the wind and water on the 16th hole for one final birdie Saturday that gave him a 1-under 69 in the toughest conditions and a two-shot lead over Russell Henley at PGA National. The 24-year-old from Northern Ireland has come to expect this kind of performance. He finished one shot behind in Abu Dhabi. He played in the final group in Dubai, where nothing went well in the final round. And here is again, making key shots and big putt to keep his nose in front in the Honda Classic. "Ive been building and building toward getting my game to a level where I feel it should be," he said. "And Im pretty much at that point now." Saturday wasnt easy. McIlroy might have saved his day with a bogey on the par-3 seventh. He took a penalty drop from under a palmetto bush, and faced a shot off the pine straw across 20 yards of rough to an elevated green with the pin toward the back right. The shot came off perfectly, and he holed the 8-foot putt for bogey. "It was one of the best up-and-downs Ive ever had, I guess," McIlroy said. "And it was almost like a momentum builder. I just bogeyed the last, but walking off that seventh green with a bogey almost felt like I had saved par or I had almost gained a shot on the field. It kept any momentum that I had going to the next few holes." He closed out his round with a 5-iron into the wind to 10 feet of the flag on the 16th for a birdie, and then narrowly missed two birdie chances on the closing holes. McIlroy was at 12-under 198. Asked about the importance of winning on a major tour for the first time since the World Tour Championship in Dubai at the end of 2012, and the first time since the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick in 2012 on the PGA Tour, Boy Wonder grappled for the right answer. "It would be nice. It would be my seventh PGA Tour win," he said. "Thats what it is. No bigger, no smaller. And Ill go home and have a nice night and get up the next morning and go play the Seminole Pro-Member. So its all good." He also knows its not over. Henley wasnt doing anything special until he holed out from 150 yards for eagle on No. 14, and then rammed in a 50-foot birdie putt from just off the green at the 17th for birdie that gave him a 68 and put him in the last group for the first time since he won the Sony Open last year. Thats the only time Henley has won -- in his debut as a PGA Tour member -- and he hasnt been in this situation since then. Henley has only two top 10s since that win down from Waikiki Beach at the start of 2012. Now he has to chase one of golfs biggest stars, on a course where only one players -- Ernie Els in 2008 -- has come from behind on the final day to win. "Im trying not to pay attention to what Rory is doing," Henley said. "Obviously, hes playing great and hes been in this situation a little bit more than me. But I still have a lot of confidence and Im just going to try to play my game and not worry about what hes doing too much." Russell Knox of Scotland had a 68 and was three shots behind, while Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela had a 66 and was another shot back. David Hearn (70) of Brantford, Ont., was tied for 35th at 3 under. Tiger Woods is still in the game, but just barely. Woods matched the low round of the day. He was among five players who shot 65, all before the leaders teed off and the wind kicked into gear, but it was enough to move the No. 1 player 49 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 17th. Even so, he was seven shots behind. Woods has never won a PGA Tour event when trailing by more than five shots entering the last round. "Today was a positive day," Woods said after his lowest score in 10 rounds this year. "Hit the ball well and made some putts and got myself back in the hunt." It doesnt figure to be easy for Woods or anyone to track down McIlroy, who has converted the 54-hole lead in his last four PGA Tour wins dating to the 2011 Masters, where he blew a four-shot lead. That streak includes the Honda Classic two years, which he won to rise to No. 1 in the world for the first time. "Definitely not a coincidence," McIlroy said. "I learned a lot that day. I learned not to protect a 54-hole lead. I should have just stuck to the game plan, stuck to my process, not look at the leaderboard, not look at what other people are doing. ... And thats the reason that every 54-hole lead that Ive had since, Ive been able to close the deal. Hopefully, I can keep that run going tomorrow." It would be a remarkable turnaround for McIlroy, who a year ago was so frustrated with his game and high expectations that he walked off the course after 26 holes, a mistake he vowed to never repeat. "Theres still 18 holes to go," he said. "But Im feeling comfortable with where I am." EDMONTON -- Former Hockey Canada top executive Bob Nicholson is joining the Edmonton Oilers to oversee business operations, promising to take a scalpel -- not a bulldozer -- to the struggling NHL franchise. Scooter Gennett Jersey . "There are a lot of things that are going very well in this organization. Im not coming in here to rip things apart," Nicholson told reporters Friday. "I know what Hockey Canada was when I started, and I know where this (Oilers) organization is today. "There are huge challenges, but I think there could be something very special in this city." Oilers owner Daryl Katz was not at the news conference, a not unusual occurrence for the reclusive pharmacy magnate. Nicholsons hiring is part of a corporate reorganization for Katzs sports entertainment properties. Under the newly named Oilers Entertainment Group, or OEG, Katz will be chairman while former Oiler Kevin Lowe and Nicholson will be vice-chairmen. Lowe will continue to be in charge of hockey operations while Nicholson will handle the business side -- but both said they expect the other to help out across the board. Patrick LaForge remains in charge of day-to-day business operations as president and chief operating officer. Nicholson spent 16 years as president and chief executive officer of Hockey Canada, officially stepping down May 31. Canadian hockey teams excelled under his watch, winning numerous championships including seven Olympic gold medals. Lowe and Nicholson worked closely on Canadas Olympic teams, and Nicholson said that relationship was a key reason he signed up with the Oilers. "The relationship that I have with Kevin, and the one that Ive really developed with Daryl over the last little bit, had a big part," said Nicholson. "I had a great job with Hockey Canada. I didnt have to rush into anything. I was going to play a little more golf. "But when you get a chance to work with the right people in the right organization, the time was right to join the Oilers." Lowe said Nicholson has already started delivering ideas on the hockey side. "Yesterday Bob sat in on pro scouting meetings and was engaged with the scouts," said Lowe. "Hell be as involved as much as we can get him, and I know that will be a massive addition to this organization. "Hes as passionate about fixing the Oilers as we all are." In addition to the Oilers, OEG owns the 2014 Memorial Cup Champion Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL), the Oklahoma City Barons (AHL) and the Bakersfield Condors (ECHL). Lowe said more franchises are part of the long-term game plan. "Hopefully well acquire more in the future years," he said. "(Im) not predicting anything, but we know that our owner has great vision." The Oilers and the City of Edmonton have also broken ground on a new downtown arena that is slated to open for the start of the 2016-17 season. Nicholson joins a franchise and a fan base desperate for success. The Oilers have missed the playoffs every year since advancing to the Stanley Cup final in 2006. The team has been criticized for sub par scouting and poor player development, failing to rebuild the team despite having three of the last four first-overall draft picks. Other changes are underway. Earlier this week, the team announced Craig Ramsay will join Dallas Eakins coaching staff to handle the defence and power play. Assistant coach Kelly Buchberger will move over to player development. The Jets are getting good goaltending, the Red Wings are on the rise since Datsyuk’s return, a star in the making in Nashville, lineup news, Fantasy tips and more in Scott Cullen’s Statistically Speaking. Logan Thomas Jersey . HEROES Jets Goaltenders - Ondrej Pavelec had a 38-save shutout in a 1-0 shootout win over the Rangers Saturday; then Michael Hutchinson delivered a 33-save shutout, in his sixth career NHL game, against Chicago in Sunday’s 1-0 win. Getting quality goaltending is a major step forward for the Jets, considering Pavelec has ranked 24th, with a .907 save percentage (out of 26 qualified with minimum 150 games) over the past four seasons. Additionally notable about Pavelec’s play in this first month of the season is that, compared to last season, he’s facing shots from a closer distance, on average (33.02 feet last season, 30.54 feet this season, according to Sporting Charts), yet is delivering a higher save percentage. PAVELEC SHOT DISTANCE vs. SAVE PERCENTAGE YEAR AVG. SHOT DISTANCE SV% 2009-10 33.7 .906 2010-11 34.3 .914 2011-12 34.1 .906 2012-13 34.2 .905 2013-14 33.0 .901 2014-15 30.5 .921 (data from www.sportingcharts.com and www.somekindofninja.com) Taking small samples of goaltending performance doesn’t tell a whole lot. It’s great that Pavelec has a .921 save percentage this season – it would be a career-best for him – but if given the choice between using four years or one month of data to project future goaltending performance, the odds side with the larger sample of games and if Pavelec is facing closer shots this year than ever before, the odds are further stacked against maintaining this level of play. Red Wings forwards - Pavel Datsyuk and Gustav Nyquist each had two goals and an assist in a 5-2 win over Los Angeles Friday. Then, in Sunday’s 3-2 shootout loss to Buffalo, Datsyuk had a goal and an assist while Datsyuk, Nyquist and Henrik Zetterberg held better than 82% possession against the Sabres. Filip Forsberg – Scored two goals, and added an assist, in a 3-1 win at Vancouver Sunday, generating a dozen shot attempts with eight shots on goal. Forsberg has put up a point-per-game through 11 games this season, and has strong possession stats, with the Predators getting 55.7% of the shot attempts when he’s on the ice for 5-on-5 play. ZEROES Anaheims top line - The Ducks’ No.1 line of Patrick Maroon (returning from injury), Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry was pinned into their own zone – all under 20% possession -- Friday night, getting the worst of their most frequent head-to-head matchup against Antoine Roussel, Cody Eakin and Ryan Garbutt, a Stars trio that generated at least 78% of the shot attempts when they were on the ice. Zac Rinaldo - The Flyers agitator wasn’t on the ice for a shot attempt in Saturday’s loss at Florida, the second straight game in which he’s drawn a blank, compared to 17 shot attempts against during 5-on-5 play. Travis Zajac - New Jerseys top line centre failed to register a shot attempt in 21:46 against Columbus Saturday. LINEUP NEED TO KNOW Oilers LW Taylor Hall left Saturday’s loss to Vancouver with a knee injury, suffered when Chris Tanev knocked him off balance into the Canucks’ net. Hall will be out 2-4 weeks. That could mean more ice time for David Perron, who has been playing three fewer minutes per game this season. Maple Leafs LW Joffrey Lupul is out three weeks with a broken hand. Wild D Jared Spurgeon is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury, suffered against San Jose Thursday night. The Hurricanes, getting LW Nathan Gerbe and RW Patrick Dwyer back into the lineup, made RW Alexander Semin a healthy scratch Saturday and Sunday. Sharks LW Tomas Hertl played on the fourth line Saturday, a season-low 9:30 time on ice, but did score a goal, snapping an eight-game goalless streak. Suicide bombs last month a few hundred kilometres (miles) away have increased concerns, and an Islamic warlord has urged his followers to attack the Sochi Olympics, Russian President Vladimir Putins pet project. For all that cricket is a team game, it is ultimately a series of individual battles that decide the outcome. The Test series between India and England has all the ingredients to be an absolute corker, with a number of top class performers on either side.Hosts India go in as strong favourites in conditions that are expected to expose Englands weaknesses but here, with the help of former England skipper Nasser Hussain, we look at three key head-to-head clashes that could make all the difference come the end of the five-match run… Ravichandran Ashwin v Alastair Cook Alastair Cook has an excellent record in Asia As an opening batsman, Cooks main challenge is usually trying to get the better of a burly fast bowler. The 6ft 5in Ashwin fits half that description but it is the wily off-spinners carrom ball rather than the late swing of the new cherry the England skipper must be wary of in India. Ashwin may not take the new ball but with spin-friendly conditions a near-certainty, it wont be long before Cook will be faced by the worlds No 1 ranked Test bowler. However, Cook boasts an impressive record in the subcontinent, is a superb player of spin and excelled during Englands triumphant tour of India in 2012. Doing so again would mean overcoming arguably the games most in-form bowler. Whoever comes out on top of this particular battle will have significantly improved their sides chances of success... Ravichandran Ashwin has a phenomenal record on home soil Nasser says: The way Ashwin has bowled over the last couple of years and in particular the way hes bowled to left-handers - his record against left-handers is absolutely phenomenal, I think its even better than Graeme Swanns was.Obviously Cook is a wonderful player of spin and hes got more runs than anyone other foreign player in Asian conditions. He had a reasonably quiet time of it in Bangladesh so that battle - their star bowler against one of our star batsmen is going to be absolutely vital. They might not open with Ashwin as Bangladesh did with the Mehedi Hasan but if Cook can show the left-handers a game plan and a way of going about playing Ashwin while he is in the middle, that will calm and comfort the dressing room. That is going to be a massive battle.Ravindra Jadeja v Joe Root Ravindra Jadeja celebrates dismissing Joe Root during Indias 2014 tour of England How England cope against spin is likely to be the biggest factor in the outcome of the series and it is not just Ashwin they have to worry about. The left-arm spin of Jadeja will also test the England batsmen, in particular the right-handers with the ball spinning away from them.Of those right-handers, Root will be seen as the prize wicket for India. The England No 3 has established himself as one of the worlds leading batsmen in any conditions and the tourists will need him to prove it again, and deal with Jadejas threat, in the next two months... As ever, Root will be a key player for England in the five-match series in India Nasser says: Root, with Cook, is one of Englands best two players of spin. A lot of the talk has been about Ashwin and the way he has bowled recently. But Jadeja in home conditions where the odd one turns and the odd one doesnt will be a handful, especially for Englands right-handers.Even though Root has a fabulous record in Test matches against left-arm spin - he averages about 67 against left-arm spin - recently in one-day cricket and against Bangladesh hes been getting out to left-arm spin to balls that dont turn, like the ball thhat got him at Dhaka. Bruce Smith Jersey. .Jadeja is very clever, hell bowl the odd slower ball that spins, he challenges both edges of the bat and hell suddenly bowl that quicker ball and with DRS now being used in India as well, it brings in the lbws.Virat Kohli v Stuart Broad Virat Kohli hit a career-best 211 in Indias most-recent Test series Indias premier batsmen against the leader of the England bowling attack, certainly with James Anderson missing for the first Test at the very least. Kohli struggled on Indias most recent tour of England as the hosts seamers - Broad included - found a frailty just outside his off stump. Two years on and in home conditions, keeping Kohli under wraps is a different proposition entirely. The 28-year-old now captains his country and is considered the worlds best batsman by many, recently striking a career-best 211 in the Test series with New Zealand. However, Englands seamers continue to impresse, even on pitches offering them next-to-no support with Broad at the forefront. If he is able to find a bit of swing with the new ball, use his cutters to good effect and get the ball reversing later in the innings, Broad may fancy his chances of coming out on top against Kohli... Watch all five Tests live on Sky Sports as Alastair Cooks side take on the No 1 side in the world Nasser says: This is another massive one. Kohli is obviously Indias star player, a fabulous player and hes in great form of late.He went through a quiet patch a couple of months ago in Test match cricket but just towards the end of that New Zealand series, in all forms of the game, hes been absolutely phenomenal - a run machine. So he goes into the series in good nick.Obviously, last time he was in England, he struggled. England bowled very well at him and he didnt get many runs at all - he kept nicking off outside off stump. England bowled a fifth stump line and got him edging, playing away from his body. That is in England, in India with not so much movement, not so much bounce and carry, you might not even have two slips at times. I think theyll be a bit more in it for Englands seamers in India than there was in Bangladesh but that isnt difficult because there was nothing at all for them there, apart from a bit of reverse swing.England will have to get him in early and theyve been helped a bit by the amount of injuries India have had - Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan are missing for the first Test - so there is an opportunity. The lads they are bringing in are good players, Gautam Gambhir and so on but the key man is still Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara is in good nick at No 3.So if they can get him in early or, if its a bit later, get that ball reversing and hope that there is enough carry and bounce to get Kohli playing away from his body, they have a chance.Watch the first Test between India and England from 3.30am on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports 2 HD. NEW YORK -- Yankees President Randy Levine testified at Alex Rodriguezs grievance hearing Tuesday and denied conspiring with Major League Baseball on the 211-game suspension given to the New York third baseman last summer. On the 10th day of the hearing, which started in September, Levine was asked a series of questions by Rodriguez lawyer Joseph Tacopina, according to a person with knowledge of the proceeding. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the proceedings are confidential. The person said Levine testified for 10-15 minutes and denied having any personal gain from Rodriguezs suspension or the Yankees falling under the luxury tax threshold; and of having an agreement to receive a commission of any money the team saved because of the ban. Levine also denied discussing Rodriguezs discipline with Major League Baseball or Commissioner Bud Selig; and telling Rodriguez surgeon Dr. Bryan Kelly or anyone else that he wanted the player off the field, the person said. The person also said Levine testified he may have jokingly used the phrase "is he off the juice?" when talking with Rodriguez about other players who werent performing. Levine testified he had no exact recollection. The hearing resumed Monday before arbitrator Fredric Horowitz, who also heard the case from Sept. 30-Oct. 3 and Oct. 15-18. Howard Gans, a lawyer for MLB, said in papers filed in federal court that Horowitz will hear the case daily through Nov. 26 rather than the original plan to recess after Friday and resume Dec. 16. MLB said U.S. District Judge Edgar Ramos in Manhattan issued an order Tuesday compelling Michael Sitrick, head of the public relations firm Sitrick & Co., to comply with a Sept. 19 subpoena issued by Horowitz to appear at the arbitrration and to provide documents. Jonathan Casillas Jersey. Sitrick & Co. worked on Rodriguezs behalf earlier this year. In papers filed in New York Supreme Court on Oct. 29, MLB alleged Sitrick & Co. had provided records from Bosch to Yahoo Sports, which published a story Feb. 5 saying the name of 2011 NL MVP Ryan Braun appeared in records of Biogenesis of America, the Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs. MLB said in the court papers it believed the documents had been "provided to Sitrick & Co. by Rodriguez or others acting on his behalf." Miami New Times had reported Jan. 29 that Rodriguez bought human growth hormone and other performance-enhancing substances from Biogenesis during 2009-12. Sitricks lawyers, who had the matter removed to federal court, did not respond to an email seeking comment on Ramos order, which MLB said was read from the bench. Braun agreed July 22 to a season-ending 65-game suspension. Rodriguez was suspended on Aug. 5 for alleged violations of the sports drug agreement and labour contract, and the players union filed the grievance to overturn the penalty. It remains unclear whether Rodriguez will testify; he continued to play while contesting the penalty. The three-time AL MVP said four years ago he used PEDs while with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03, but has denied using them since. At the time of his suspension, MLB said the penalty was for "use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance-enhancing substances, including testosterone and human growth hormone over the course of multiple years" and for "engaging in a course of conduct intended to obstruct and frustrate the office of the commissioners investigation." TAMPA, Fla. Mitchell Trubisky Jersey . -- Joe Girardi found out about Derek Jeters retirement announcement the same way almost everyone else did: when the New York Yankees captain posted a letter to the world on his Facebook page this week. Girardi left snowy New York on Friday and arrived at spring training for his seventh year as Yankees manager, and he spent the first eight minutes of his 20-minute opening news conference discussing Jeters decision to retire after this season. "I think we were probably all a little bit taken aback by it," Girardi said. "Youre never sure how someones going to do it, but I had no inkling that thats what he was thinking." After missing the playoffs for just the second time in 19 years, the Yankees were back in business when pitchers and catchers reported ahead of Saturdays opening workout. Alex Rodriguezs locker was empty following his season-long suspension. Masahiro Tanaka inherited Mariano Riveras locker and Shawn Kelley got Andy Pettittes stall. Scott Sizemore, attending camp on a minor league contract, was assigned Robinson Canos jersey No. 24. Position players report next Wednesday, when Jeter holds a news conference at Steinbrenner Field to explain his decision. Girardi has exchanged texts with the 39-year-old shortstop but has not spoken with him. "This is going to be a guy thats hard to replace in your clubhouse and on your club," he said. "Its the nature of the business where people age and they move on and they go and do different things in their life, and in our life its a little bit quicker than some of the other working people of this world." Jeter was limited to 17 games last year after fracturing his left ankle in the 2012 playoffs and breaking it again last spring during his rehabilitation. Girardi said Jeter always told him "I feel great," but that he could sense frustration. After working out Friday with Brian Roberts at the Yankees minor league complex, Jeter demurred discussing his decision. "It makes no sense to do it here and then do it again over there, so Ill do it all over there one time," he said. And so now Jeter will go on a valedictory tour, much like Mariano Rivera did last year. Jeter is not the type to call attention to himself, making his public announcement before spring training all the more surprising. "It could have been just watching how Mo did it, and how much fun everyone seemed to have with it with Mo," Girardi said. "He might have said, you know, its a pretty good way to go out." Jeter has won five World Series titles with the Yankees but none since 2009, and his final lap of the major leagues figures to set the theme as New York tries for title No. 28. His teammates looked forward to speaking with him after he reports. "Not really surprised, saddened I guess that hes not going to be around," ace pitcher CC Sabathia said. "You want a guy like that to play forever." Having witnessed Chipper Jones final season with the Atlanta Braves in 2012, new Yankees catcher Brian McCann is looking forward to Jeters last go-round. "Hes been the face of baseball since he broke in," McCann said. "I went through it with one Hall of Famer. Im going to go through it with another." David Robertson, inheriting the closers role from Rivera, hadnt thought Jeter would make his plans known before the seasons end. "But Im really glad he did," he said. "I think its going to give the fans a chance to come out this year and see him in his final season in pinstripes." Robertsons new job is one of many changes for the Yankees, who spent $471 million on free agents, including a $20 million payment to Tanakas old club in Japan. McCann and outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran are among the many newcomers, and first baseman Mark Teixeira is returning from a wrist injury that sidelined him most of last season. Cano -- the Yankees top hitter -- left for a $240 million, 10-year deal with Seattle. Girardi predicted for the April 1 opener at Houston that Yankees players at every position other than pitcher will be different from opening day last year. The only time thats happened in franchise history was 1947, according to STATS. "I think it is probably the biggest transition Ive been through," Girardi said. "I need to learn a lot of new faces fairly quickly." Mike Singletary Jersey . Manager Alex Ferguson says the injury was sustained while the player tried to hit a volley toward the end of training on Tuesday. Tarik Cohen Jersey . Halladays resume as a Blue Jay is among the elite in the franchises 36-year history. Over 12 seasons in Toronto, he was named an All-Star six times. He had arguably the finest campaign of his career in 2003 when he posted a 22-7 record, a 3.The Dallas Stars landed a big-time scorer to fit into their second-line centre spot, sending forward depth to Ottawa in return. Numbers Game looks at the Jason Spezza trade. The Stars Get: C Jason Spezza and LW Ludwig Karlsson. Spezza, 31, has been one of the premier scoring centres in the league and, since 2005-2006, only Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Alex Ovechkin, Joe Thornton and Pavel Datsyuk have a higher points-per-game than Spezzas 1.06 (611 points in 575 games). With a decided tilt towards more offensive zone starts, which makes sense given his skill set, Spezza has put up solid possession stats. In an ideal world, he would be better without the puck, but Spezza has consistently generated shots when hes on the ice. Hes also very effective on the power play, which ought to help a Dallas power play that was 23rd in the league last season, converting 15.9% of their attempts. In Dallas, Spezza should also tend to get favourable matchups, as other teams will still focus on Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Valeri Nichushkin on the top line. At the moment, candidates to skate on Spezzas wing should include veteran Erik Cole, prospects Colton Sceviour and Brett Ritchie as well as, if hes cleared to play, Rich Peverley. What that might indicate is that the Stars are going to still be in the market for additional help. Some of that additional help comes in the person of Spezzas winger in Ottawa at the end of last season, Ales Hemsky, who signed a three-year, $12-million deal with the Stars. Hemsky, 30, was getting miscast in Edmonton, as the Oilers turned to younger talent and cut his ice time, but joining Spezza in Ottawa at the trade deadline showed that Hemsky still has what it takes to produce when he plays with top talent. As a setup guy, Hemsky might fit with Benn and Seguin on the top line, allowing Valeri Nichushkin to slide in alongside Spezza. With one year remaining on his contract, Spezza brings a $7-million cap hit, though hes a significant bargain as his actual salary is only $4-million. Karlsson is a 6-foot-3 winger who spent most of his first pro season in the ECHL, scoring 24 points in 39 games. With the Senators taking on three players, Karlsson going the other way eases any potential pressure on Ottawas reserve list. If he materializes into a legit NHL prospect, it would come as a major surprise and probably an added kick in the teeth to the Senators, who are already giving up the clear top player in the deal. Dallas is a team on the rise and adding Spezza and Hemsky to the fold does a nice job closing the gap between the Stars and the top contenders in the Western Conference. The Senators Get: RW Alex Chiasson, C Alex Guptill, LW Nick Paul and 2nd round pick in 2015. Chiasson is a 23-year-old winger coming off a decent rookie season during which he scored 13 goals and 35 points in 79 games, with meddiocre possession stats that were substantially better than his minus-21 rating would suggest, thanks to one of the lowest on-ice save percentages in the league. Johnthan Banks Jersey. Thats the kind of thing that tends to bounce back, so dont write off Chiasson entirely as a defensive liability. Offensively, he broke into his NHL career with 11 goals and 54 shots on goal in 19 games (from late 2012-2013 through October 2013), and the 6-foot-3 winger looked like he might have the making of a big goal-scorer, more because he was generating a lot of shots rather than the unsustainable rate at which he was finishing, but Chiassons ice time decreased as the season went on and he scored eight goals in the final 70 games of the season. With offensive upside, its possible that Chiasson would find his way into a role with the Senators top six forwards, but there will be some competition among other offseason additions as well as the wingers already in the organization. With Clarke MacArthur and Bobby Ryan the established scorers, there will be room for competition with the likes of Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman and Mika Zibanejad, depending on the next steps for Senators GM Bryan Murray. Still on his entry-level deal, Chiasson will make $900,000 next season, which is a bargain price for a top-nine forward, particularly one that could conceivably score 20 goals in the right situation. 22-year-old Alex Guptill is a solid prospect, who scored 61 points in 69 games over his last two seasons at the University of Michigan. He joined the Texas Stars late in the season, chipping in a couple of points in five games, so hell start next season at Binghamton and get used to the pro grind. Nick Paul is a 19-year-old winger that the Stars drafted in the fourth round last summer. He has good size (6-foot-3, 200 pounds) and while he made progress in his second OHL season, scoring 26 goals and 46 points in 67 games, he was even better in the postseason, scoring 12 goals and 18 points in 22 playoff games. Both Paul and Guptill have a chance to eventually play for the Senators, but both are going to need some time before thats a realistic consideration. A second-round pick brings a little better than a one-in-three chance of yielding an NHL player. All told, this package isnt particularly sexy in exchange for the second-leading scorer in franchise history, but the Senators didnt have much leverage and have reasonable chance to get two or three NHLers out of the deal, eventually. It might be more encouraging if the Senators were going to take the cap savings from this deal and re-invest it in the teams payroll, but we will have to wait and see if anything happens in that respect before the Senators get credit for losing skill and cutting payroll. Paradise Valley, AZ (SportsNetwork. Brad Richardson Jersey .com) - The San Diego Padres will host the 2016 All-Star Game. Major League Baseball made the announcement Thursday at the conclusion of its quarterly meetings in Arizona. I am very pleased to award the 2016 All-Star Game to the San Diego Padres, who made a detailed and comprehensive bid in conjunction with city officials, said outgoing commissioner Bud Selig in a statement Thursday. San Diego is one of Americas most beautiful cities, and showcasing Petco Park in its thriving downtown will be a remarkable opportunity for the Padres franchise and all of Major League Baseball. San Diego will host the All-Star Game for the third time, but it will be the first for Petco Park, which opened in 2004. Jack Murphy Stadium hosted the Mid-Summer Classic in 1978 and 1992. The San Diego Padres are honored to host Major League Baseballs 2016 All- Star Game at Petco Park, said Padres chairman Ron Fowler. Padres fans have been awaiting the return of the Mid-Summer Classic for more than two decades, and we are thrilled with todays news. We thank Commissioner Selig, Commissioner-Elect Rob Manfred and all of Major League Baseball for selecting Americas Finest City. Cincinnatis Great American Ball Park will host this years All-Star Game. San Diegos selection for next year will mark the second time in recent years that the contest will be played in National League parks consecutively, as Pittsburgh hosted in 2006 and San Francisco followed in 2007. Kubiak, the former head coach of the Houston Texans who spent last year as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, has a long history with the Broncos. He was the backup quarterback for John Elway from 1983-91 and spent 11 seasons as the clubs offensive coordinator from 1995-2005. When I got off the plane ... I knew that I was home, said Kubiak on Tuesday. Im proud to be back in the Bronco nation. This was a big part of my life and Im looking at it be a big part of it again. Now, its time to go to work. Kubiak takes over for John Fox, who guided Denver to AFC West titles in each of his four seasons and also led the Broncos to the Super Bowl after the 2013 campaign. This years squad was eliminated in the divisional round at home by the Indianapolis Colts, leading to Foxs departure in a mutual decision with management. This is a great football team, Kubiak said about trying to fulfill the lofty expectations created by the success of the last four years. The next level is winning the Super Bowl. You have to position yourself for taking that next step. Its been proven year in and year out that you want to be playing your best in January. Kubiak remembers how important January football is. He was on the sideline as offensive coordinator for each of Denvers two Super Bowl titles with Elway as the quarterback. Elway, of course, is now in charge of the Broncos as the teams executive vice president and general manager. He and Fox could not agree on a direction for the team going forward, opening the door for a new coach. Kubiak was the Hall of Famers No. 1 choice. He was definitely at the top of the list, Elway said about the coaching search. Gary was the leader in the clubhouse. Our concern was whether he wanted to be (a head coach) again. Kubiak went from the Broncos offensive coordinator to the head coach of the Texans in 2006. He helped turn the Houston franchise around in his eight seasons, leading the club to its first two playoff appearances. Thhe Texans went 10-6 in 2011 and 12-4 in 2012, winning the AFC South and one playoff game each year, but a disastrous 2013 followed. Shane Doan Jersey. After winning their first two games of the 2013 campaign, Houston went on to lose 11 straight before Kubiak was fired in early December. He finished his tenure with a record of 61-64. Kubiak landed in Baltimore this past season and helped the Ravens to one of their top offensive performances. Baltimore posted a franchise-record 364.9 yards per game on offense and the Ravens reached the playoffs as a sixth seed, beating Pittsburgh before falling to New England. As numerous coaching vacancies opened earlier this month, Kubiak declined to throw his hat in the ring. He said he was happy to remain in Baltimore, that is until the Broncos job was there for the taking. I felt very good about what I was doing (in Baltimore), said Kubiak on Tuesday. I was very comfortable, but this (opportunity) is a game changer. This is where I got my start. This is home for me. This means so much to me. I cant wait to go out there. I was standing there with (the team) last time they won the championship. Now, Kubiak will have the task of trying to lead the Broncos to another title. Whether he has quarterback Peyton Manning at his disposal is another question. Kubiak said he has spoken with Manning, who hasnt decided whether he will return for another season. We have talked, talked a couple of days ago at length and last night via text, said Kubiak, who added that the two didnt speak about Mannings upcoming decision. We didnt get that far. It was just conversations about family, about how hes feeling. We were just setting the stage for our time to get together and talk. This is his time, his decision and I need to be there for him. Kubiak started five games as Elways backup during his time as a player with the Broncos. After his playing career ended, he took his first coaching job as running backs coach with Texas A&M in 1992 and 93, then moved on to the NFL as quarterbacks coach with San Francisco in 1994 before first returning to the Broncos.
